{15 Minute Monday} Kids Clothes Bins

July 14, 2013

Today I am continuing on with my 15 Minute Monday posts. Each Monday I will post an organising task that will only take you 15 minutes to complete. 52 of these throughout the year and we will be well on our way to having beautifully organised homes. Follow along on Instagram or Facebook and together we can organise our homes 15 minutes at a time.

Today I have a really simple little trick to organise our kids clothes, in particular, the ones they will be wearing tomorrow. End the clothing struggle which results in a mad dash to get out of the house every morning. You know what I am talking about? Mr Primary School can’t find a clean school shirt, Miss Pre-School wants to wear her fairy dress (for the 5th day in a row) and Dad is offering to dress the baby but doesn’t know where her clothes are. Sound familiar?

All you will need for today’s 15 minute Monday is a storage bin of some description. It doesn’t matter what it is, as long as it fits a whole outfit for your child. I picked this one up from Kmart, they were in a pack of 3 for $6 (they had blue ones too).

The first thing you need to do is find a storage container. If you want you can make a pretty label (using this tutorial) to stick on the front. I made up this little one for Hazel’s box and printed it on to label stickers.

Now you just need to use it. Each night before Hazel goes to bed, we go and pick out her clothes for the next day (If your children are a bit older, encourage them to do this by themselves). Everything goes into the box, shoes, socks, nappy, hair ties and hat. Everything seems to be much less stressful in the evenings, and little people are usually more willing to negotiate. Plus, picking clothes the night before gives you time to throw on a quick load of washing if you need to.

Then the next morning, it is just a matter of grabbing the box and getting dressed. This little tip isn’t just for kids either, it works just as well for teens and adults. Try hanging a hook or two inside your closet or on the back of your bedroom door, then each night hang your clothes ready to go for the next day.

If you are really ambitious, you could try something like this to organise a whole weeks worth of clothes in one go. Just label each day of the week on the boxes and fill according to the weather and what you have on for the week.

I hope this alleviates some of that stress in the mornings and gets you off to a smoother day. Spend more time enjoying your coffee and less time arguing with Superman (It is 5 degrees outside, you CAN’T wear just red undies).
