The Big List

June 12, 2013

There was a time when I tried to store every project I wanted to complete in my head. Needless to say, it wasn’t very effective. Sure I would remember that I needed to organise my garage however I was forever forgetting the little things, like de-cluttering our utensil drawer. And you know what forgetting lots of little things turns into? A big mess!

One day I had enough of keeping everything in my head so I started writing it down. There was a few reasons I needed to get it all out of my head, firstly I was forgetting half of it, I was having trouble sleeping because I constantly had project ideas going round and around my head, my sanity was starting to go due to the lack of sleep and most importantly, because I kept everything in my head, B had no idea what was happening around our home.

This is my big list. And boy oh boy is it big. Everything that I can’t achieve today goes onto the list and every time I think of a new project, it gets added.

Each week I have a look over my big list and see if there is anything I can do this week. Even if it is only part of a big job – for instance, I want to make some fabric boxes for my linen cupboard. I probably won’t have time to make them this week however I do have time to pick up the supplies I need. Then when I next have some spare time I can do the sewing.

Some times I will also add items to this list that I need to buy for a room. I am looking for a stool for my bathroom and have something very specific in mind but am not in any hurry to buy it. I have added this to my big list because I might not be able to find the one I want this week but won’t forget all about it when the perfect stool pops up.

If you are lacking motivation and are finding it hard to get things crossed off maybe try some weekly goals {If you are looking for some inspiration, tomorrows post is my weekly goals}.

The Big List is now available in my online store as part of the Lists Kit. You could put them in your Home Management Binder, Day Planner, on a clipboard or in a frame like we did with our Cleaning Checklist.

Do you have a ‘big list’? Dare I ask, how long is yours? Mine just seems to go on forever!

I don't have a "Big List". My list is small pieces of paper all over the place. Beside my bed, in my purse, on the fridge… Love your idea of keeping it all on one list. You've motivated me to gather all the little lists and compile one big list. Thank you for the printable list.

Sharla, I used to have the same problem. It drove me crazy not being able to find anything. I am glad I was able help. Keep an eye out over the next week, I have a few more posts about organising all your to do lists coming up plus a couple of free printables 🙂

I have often thought that a roll of toilet paper may be a better place to write my big list. that way I wouldn’t run out of room to write it all down! lol
