{15 Minute Monday} Cutlery Drawer

June 17, 2013

Today I am starting a new series called 15 Minute Monday. Each Monday I will post an organising task that will only take you 15 minutes to complete. 52 of these throughout the year and we will be well on our way to having beautifully organised homes. Follow along on Instagram or Facebook and together we can organise our homes 15 minutes at a time.

For my first 15 Minute Monday, I am going to start with a really easy one – the cutlery drawer.

The only supplies you will need for this task is some hot soapy water and a cleaning cloth. If you don’t have a cutlery drawer divider you can pick one up quite cheaply from a department store, supermarket or dollar shop.

The first thing you need to do is empty everything out of your cutlery drawer onto a clean kitchen bench.

Next take your divider out and give it a good clean in some warm soapy water then dry it off. Wipe the inside and outside of the drawer over as well.

Now you need to purge. Relocate anything that doesn’t belong in the drawer and put anything you no longer want or need into a donation/hand-me-down box. Find a home for as many items as you can that aren’t cutlery.

Move your vegetable peelers, bottle openers, salad servers, knives and kids plastic cutlery to another drawer if you can.

Once you have purged as much as possible, divide your cutlery up into categories depending on how many sections you have in your divider. Pop the divider back into the drawer then place your cutlery into the divider.

Here is my before and after.

That was the easy part, now you have to keep it that way. But don’t fear, I have some tips for you.

When you are done organising, get the whole family to come and have a look. Explain to your kids that these are the only items that belong in the cutlery drawer. If you have moved their plastic cutlery, make sure you show them where to find it.

My second tip for keeping your drawer organised is to give it a quick tidy up every time you wash up or unstack the dishwasher. It will only take a few seconds and will keep it nice and tidy.

I would love to see your cutlery drawer if you are following along with my 15 Minute Monday posts. Post a picture to my Facebook page, hashtag #15minutemonday on Instagram or link to your blog post in the comments below.
