Cash Envelopes

April 12, 2013
Following on from our Budget Binder post, I am going to show you our cash envelopes and how we use them.

Earlier this year we switched to using cash only for all our spending {bills are payed online} and I am so happy we did. You will be amazed at how much using a cash system can help control your spending.

You can have as many or as few categories as you like. We have 5;

  • Groceries (includes nappies and medications)
  • Entertainment (includes take out, date nights and family outings)
  • Clothing (includes hair cuts and beauty supplies)
  • Home (includes organisation and home maintenance)
  • Spending (each family member has ‘pocket money’ to spend each fortnight)

I whipped up these cute little cash envelopes and labeled each one. They fit perfectly inside my wallet. When I am going out, I just pop the envelopes I need in my wallet.

Each envelope has a card inside to track our spending. At the start of each fortnight I write down how much was put into each one, then every time we spend money it is logged on the card. This isn’t essential for your cash system however I found it really hard to keep track of what we had spent without it.

When we aren’t using our envelopes we keep them in our mail caddy.

I think the thing I like most about cash budgeting {apart from my super cute envelopes} is that once your money is gone it’s GONE! You can’t overdraw accounts, you can’t use your savings and you can’t put it on credit.

Being able to physically see how much we have left to spend has been great for curbing my spending and for helping us save. By our second fortnight we actually had money left. How great is that!

Let’s chat about cash systems shall we? Do you use cash? How do you keep track of it all? Would anyone like a tutorial on how I made the envelopes?

    We use cash, each week I take out as set amount of money (it's like a mini payday!) and that covers food, petrol, entertainment etc I use paper envelopes as I'd never thought of making some nice reusable material ones ….. something to add to the to do list! A tutorial on how you made them would be great as I've not made anything since I was at school!
